One of our clients had a process-related problem that seems to be very common. They had a number of processes that they needed to automate in SharePoint. The problem was these processes where fairly complex and had some regulatory and legal requirements to them. As is often the case, it was difficult for the functional process owners to communicate complex process requirements to the SharePoint Administrators in the IT organization. While the IT staff was expert in the technology, they did not understand the nuances of the processes. Similarly, the process owners intuitively understood all the details of the process, but had difficulty explaining them, or remembering to mention something that they would just naturally do. Beckman Coulter, a manufacturer of sophisticated medical devices, understands how critical product assembly and documentation are to its business. Beckman used to create paper-based assembly instructions, but the creation and modification process was slow and cumbersome. The paper-based instructions were also very wordy and because Beckman has a diverse workforce, choosing the right words or translations took even more time in the creation of the instructions. Beckman needed to find a better way to create assembly instructions.
