Stop Designing in 2D

I am always surprised, no make that astounded, by the number of companies that are still designing in 2D software.  3D CAD has been around, and relatively mainstream, for over two decades.  When I ask this question of my customers they tell me things like “Oh, Mike can crank out 16 drawings a day in 2D, but the 3D CAD jockey only puts out 8 drawings a day.”  I have my response ready: Continue Reading

The New Enterprise PDM Task Tool

One of the new tools in SolidWorks Enterprise PDM (EPDM) 2010 is the automated EPDM Task Tool. This tool helps users and system administrators automate a number of things related to Engineering output. With the tool, you can create renditions (alternate format/presentation of content) of SolidWorks Parts, Assemblies, or Drawings. The Task Tool also enables remote printing, and can create these types of output content during EPDM Workflow state changes or from right-click menu options.  Continue Reading

Is Your SolidWorks Data in Shape?

Razorleaf has just released the new CADFIT tool for public consumption.  I don’t recommend actually eating or consuming the tool, but I do recommend that you use it.  “Well of course you do, you work for Razorleaf.”  Okay, that factor not withstanding, CADFIT is a really great tool to help you determine the health of your SolidWorks files, to check and see if they are “fit.”   Continue Reading

CADFIT’s Value to SolidWorks Users

The CADFIT tool for SolidWorks has just been released by Razorleaf for general use.  You can read the marketing blurb to see a list of features and benefits, as well as what past users have to say about the tool.  But what does CADFIT really do? How is it going to help your company design better products and get to market faster?  As with any data analysis tool, it depends on what you do with the results that really matters.  Continue Reading

Troubleshooting EPDM Permissions

Anyone who works with SolidWorks Enterprise PDM (EPDM) knows that there are multiple factors that play a role in user permissions. Sometimes it can be difficult to determine the kind of permission to apply to achieve a desired result or to find the setting that is causing an undesired behavior. So let’s dig in to the EPDM security model and take a look at the different criteria that EPDM uses to provide access to files.  Continue Reading

EPDM Dispatch for File Renaming

SolidWorks’ Enterprise PDM (EPDM) system contains what some might call a “poor man’s API” known as the Dispatch Tool.  The Dispatch Tool allows non-programmers (those who don’t write formal code in Visual Studio.NET) to create basic programs, scripts, and functions within EPDM without having to learn a programming language.  The tool is limited in functionality of course and is a procedural language, but it does provide a lot of ways to manipulate data inside EPDM.  This article highlights the capabilities of the Dispatch Tool through an example that renames a file with the information contained on the file’s Data Card.  Sample code for this example is provided.  Continue Reading
