ENOVIA SmarTeam .NET Problems
Multiple ENOVIA SmarTeam versions are currently experiencing problems as a result of a series of Microsoft Windows Updates published earlier this year. Specifically, the problems are related to several SmarTeam executables, including SmarTeam Editor, the SmarTeam Workflow Service, and other SmarTeam executables. The core problem is that Microsoft appears to have changed their implementation of some garbage collection code in all versions of the .NET Framework, and this code is fundamental to a number of applications like SmarTeam. Wow. For those of you in the SolidWorks – SmarTeam communities, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised if you haven’t read about this elsewhere already. With the release of SolidWorks 2011 early last week, ENOVIA SmarTeam provided the fastest certification they have ever provided for a new version of SolidWorks. In less than one week, SmarTeam had certified SolidWorks 2011 SP0 with ENOVIA SmarTeam V5R20 SP4 (it certainly took more than a week to certify the new version, but this is some impressive scheduling on Dassault’s part). There are some details, and a few caveats, but in general it seems like the SolidWorks and ENOVIA brands are working closer together than ever inside of Dassault Systemes. 
Fear seems to be a big part of the engineering-on-the-cloud discussion, at least in the blogosphere and on discussion boards. But I think there are two different fears that need to be addressed. The first fear, the fear of losing your intellectual property, can be overcome and it is what I would call an “unhealthy” fear. The second, the fear of falling behind, is trickier but I would argue that it is a “healthy” fear because worrying about it can make you stronger and ultimately help you.
