ENOVIA SmarTeam V5R20 New Features

ENOVIA SmarTeam V5R20 was released for General Availability (GA) in February, 2010.  Service Pack 1 was co-released, so effectively it can be considered part of “what’s new” in V5R20.  So what is new with Dassault Systemes’ most prevalent PDM platform?  New packaging (installation packaging, not the shipping boxes), new viewer capabilities, enhanced CAD support, specific module feature enhancements, and PLMDB support have all been introduced in this version.  All in all, there is nothing revolutionary in this release, but there are a lot of significant improvements

What’s New VMware Workstation 7

You skipped Windows Vista, and now you really want to see if Windows 7 is worth the leap.  Or maybe you may want to test SQL Server 2008 installed on Windows Server 2008 for your PDM system.  For many IT professionals today, the solution of choice for these challenges is virtualization.  And if VMware is your virtualization brand of choice, you’ll be glad to know that VMware Workstation 7 is available, with some new features just for those of us in the CAD and 3D arenas.  Continue Reading

Getting Rid of 2D in 5 Steps

If you read my previous rant about why people are still designing in 2D, then this one is the next step: getting rid of the 2D authoring tools at a company.  Today, there’s no reason why companies can’t make the switch – it’s just a matter of taking the time and having the willpower to do it.  Of course I am oversimplifying a bit when I say this, but you can get rid of 2D from a company with basically five steps

DriveWorks UI Reverts On Navigation

An interesting situation arose with one of our clients which highlights the way that the DriveWorks Excel design master handles input controls. The user interface (UI) on this DriveWorks implementation had several forms, including one with a matrix of checkboxes. Users manipulate the matrix to control the holes in a pattern, but the UI was exhibiting strange behavior. When the Previous button was used to return to the prior form and then back to the matrix form, the checkboxes would revert to the original values, removing the user’s selections.  As you might expect, this was not what the client was looking for out of their DriveWorks implementation.
